10 Tips For Tahoe’s Big Storm

By: Blog Tahoe
It’s here. The storm everyone has been talking about rolled through the Sierra Foothills Thursday afternoon carrying with it the promise of low elevation snow, monster powder and a very crazy weekend.
1. Stay indoors. A tad obvious I know but I’m just getting warmed up.
2. Stay informed. Listen to a weather radio, or a portable battery-powered radio for updated emergency information.
3. Be weary of wind. Wind steals heat away from the body, lowers body temperature and can be very harsh on exposed skin.
4. Cover your mouth. If you are out in the cold make sure to protect your innards. Use a ski mask or other winter face covering.
5. Move animals to sheltered areas. Take care of your pets. Fur doesn’t keep out a blizzard.
6. Eat and drink regularly. Food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat.
7. Watch for new hazards. A big storm can quickly change the landscape. After the storm move carefully looking for new hazards. Don’t walk on snow unless you know what’s below it.
8.Don’t drive. It’s better to watch a storm, than participate in it.
9. If you must drive, be prepared. See Blog Tahoe’s article “Do you make these 5 winter driving mistakes?”
10. Do something different. While severe storms can cause quite a hassle they also offer a great opportunity to do something out of the ordinary. Break out a board game or a good book, spend some time talking with your family or start a storm journal.
Stay safe this winter.
