5 Things To Say On A Northstar-at-Tahoe Chairlift

By: Aaron Robbins

There is nothing worse then a long awkward chairlift ride up a Lake Tahoe ski area resort. Actually, there are plenty of things worse but, for the

sake of this article, let’s pretend there’s not. Some people prefer a quite chairlift ride; I guess there’s something about enjoying the Lake Tahoe ski area in peace. Not me. If I have a great run, just landed some crazy trick or found a neat little area of fresh Lake Tahoe powder I want to tell someone about it. Seems simple enough but for some reason the opening line always trips me up. How do you break the ice with a total stranger? Well, it’s not easy and I’d be lieing if I said there weren’t inherit risks. But, if your game, don’t mind giving an impromptu ski lesson and are fairly confident the stranger speaks the same language as you, why not try these 5 Northstar-at-Tahoe chairlift conversation starters:

1. “I hear Mt. Pluto over there used to be a Christmas Tree farm.”
In 1949 there was an operating Christmas Tree farm in the now Lake Tahoe ski area of Northstar-at-Tahoe. You can also follow up with the fact that it is illegal to cut down a Christmas Tree in the Lake Tahoe area with out a special permit which are given out annually on a limited basis to help prevent the over growth of smaller trees.

2. “Did you know Northstars first day of skiing was on December 22nd 1972?”
The Fibreboard Corporation created Trimont Land Company in June 1966 and resort planning began that year. Construction commenced in the spring of 1971, and the mountain opened shortly after for skiing on December 22, 1972.  *Northstar Public Relations.

3. “There are 83 trails here at Northstar-at-Tahoe but I can’t seem to stay on any of them.”
The Northstar-at-Tahoe ski area has 83 trails, 13% of which are rated for beginners, 62% for intermediates and 25% for advanced skiers.

4. “It’s rumored Northstar-at-Tahoe has over 240 acres of back country skiing, but you can only access it when conditions permit.”
The Sawtooth Ridge area of Northstar offers 240 acres of expert level back country skiing and snowboarding. It’s only open when conditions permit.

5. “I hear they’re opening a Ritz Carlton here in 2009.”
Northstar-at-Tahoe will be home to The Ritz-Carlton Highlands, Lake Tahoe, the area’s first five star hotel. The hotel will be a ski-in, ski-out resort and is scheduled to open in 2009.

There you have it. Five great topics of conversation for a Northstar-at-Tahoe chairlift ride. Remember to sound natural, put them into your own words and if you actually try any of these please send me the results or better yet an .mp3 of the conversation.

    Hi!
Architectural record gave the Northstar village the apartment of the year award in 1976. are you sure the date of 1979 is accurate?

Thanks for the comment Berkley Student. You can never be sure of any thing’s accuracy online.

I have seen several dates for the opening of Northstar-at-Tahoe. Some resources suggest a date as early as 1973 while others say the Fibreboard Corporation “officially” completed the resort in 1979. There seems to be a lot of evidence that the land for Northstar was purchased in 1975. From there most records only state that Northstar was completed on schedule. I am still investigating what that schedule was exactly. To further complicate the issue the Northstar Golf Course is reported to have been completed in both 1975 and 1979. The back 9 in 75 and front in 79.

I have an email in to my contact at Booth Creek. Hopefully they will be able to shed some definitive light on the subject.

    Thanks for the comment.

I got an email from Northstar-at-Tahoe public relations this morning:

The Fibreboard Corporation created Trimont Land Company in June 1966 and resort planning began that year. Construction commenced in the spring of 1971, and the mountain opened shortly after for skiing on December 22, 1972.

Glad to finally have the actual date, thanks Jessica.
