Blog Tahoe. The backstory.

By: Aaron Robbins

My name is Aaron Robbins and I’m the guy behind Blog Tahoe. I’ve been building web sites for about a decade and exploring Tahoe for all thirty-something years of my life. It feels kind of weird to be working so hard on another Tahoe based web site. It seems like just yesterday I was building my very first web site ever called RideTahoe.com

(don’t try and go there now, it’s being used as a “made for adsense”). I can remember how excited I was to be learning html, taking pictures of Tahoe and generally writing about one of the most wonderful places on Earth.

RideTahoe.com was a site whose mission was to chronicle all the mountain bike trails around the Tahoe area through a series of navigable point of view pictures. There was no fancy stuff back in then. Just a bunch of pictures linked together forming, what I thought, was the next big thing. Virtual Mountain Biking! I chronicled The Flume Trail, TNT and a few sections of Mr. Toad’s. It was a really fun experience. I got some great emails along the way and even a few magazine feature offers. I’d love to tell you RideTahoe.com made it into the pages of a magazine but none of the offers panned out. All of the editors I talked with wanted me to “finish” the site before featuring it. They wanted a few more trails, a few more pictures and a lot more commitment to the site.

Commitment, as you know, is not the strong point of twenty-something Tahoe geeks. Of course now, I wish I’d put in the time. Had I known then what I know now, I sure as heck would’ve. I would’ve hopped on my Bontrager, headed out with my camera and snapped up 1.2 mega pixel digital pictures until the site was done. But, I didn’t. Who knows why. I was a student at the University of Nevada Reno at the time, so there is probably a mid-term or more likely a girl to blame.

I feel like now, with Blog Tahoe, I’m finally getting a second chance. After 10 years of learning and working in the Internet industry I’m finally getting an another opportunity to do something for an area that I adore. I’m excited to get started. After spending the last 30 years, hiking, camping, riding, climbing, skiing, kayaking, eating and driving all over Lake Tahoe I have a few things I’d like to say. Get ready for Blog Tahoe.
