Lake Tahoe Blog News From Around The Lake #2

Winter Wonderland
Other than a road rage incident on the Truckee Bypass and a local Truckee teacher being accused of growing pot the news still dominating local and national papers is all about our wonderful new snow. This last week was especially

good to skiers, snowboarders and resort folks. It looks like there will be a bit more before Christmas ensuring some vacationing families have a very merry Christmas. The guys over at The Unofficial Squaw Blog have a great video of skiers ripping up the new powder. If you need some motivation to head up the hill check it out.

Truckee keeps on truckin.
There has been a lot of discussion over the past few years about the bigger picture for the town of Truckee. Some like the way it is now; a small mountain town one drives through to get somewhere else (mainly Lake Tahoe or Reno). Other people have bigger ideas for the town of Truckee. Plans are moving past the proposal stage for a new rail yard, a railroad museum and an Olympic size ice skating rink. As Blog Tahoe wrote about previously, Truckee recently received a historic locomotive from the Sacramento museum and will be receiving a few more next year. The issue of how to grow but still remain small is an issue a lot of ski towns are currently facing. It seems most of them are responding by building a giant European influenced village, but, that’s another issue for a another article.

Reno - Tahoe hoping to host Winter Olympics 2018
While still more then a decade away Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition are beggining to make serious plans for their bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2018. Playing host to the games, while a tremendous honor, is seen by most as an amazing opportunity for tourism and area awareness. In a recent “In Business Las Vegas” article Lt. Gov Krolicki was quoted as saying:

“I think there are many people who don’t realize that there are benefits beyond that three-week spectacle of competition,” he said. “We’re talking about the opportunity to develop infrastructure that would benefit our state and building world-class winter sports facilities that would be used for decades beyond.”

A lot of neighboring counties and businesses (including the 1960 host Squaw Valley) have already signed on to help prepare for the Olympic bid. Blog Tahoe will keep you updated with our virtual fingers crossed.
